Guitar Chord Symbols Explained

The chord grid is the normal or standardized six block diagram that you will find in all chord directories and music books. The numbers in the black circles on each line indicate which finger you should use on your left hand. If you hold your left hand up, palm facing you (your thumb should be pointing left away from you or you are using the "other" left hand) your index or pointing finger is No1, the second finger is No2, third ring finger No3, and the fourth finger No4.

Remember that E1st is your top thinnest string. Although it is at the bottom of your guitar, furthest from you, and that your bottom E 6th thickest string is the one closest to you. Each string has a note value for tuning purposes:
E1st - B2nd - G3rd D4th A5th E6th

Above each guitar string that is played open (not covered by a fingered black dot shape) you will find either an "X" or occasionally a "T" shape or an "O" shape.

X = do not play those strings or mute them.
O = play those strings open with the rest of the guitar chord.
T = Play this bass string with your thumb.

The basic three finger Guitar chords are called Triads, which are your Minor and Major chords - with which you can play thousands of guitar songs. It is worth later, to start adding to your sound the subtleties of a 7th note or an augmented or suspended chord that adds a sense of expectation. You can also switch between the Triad, Power and Barre chords as the song requires, once you grow more confident.

The Guitar Chord Reference grid symbolises the first six frets on your guitar neck running horizontally (left to right) with the guitar strings as per the string note value explanation above, running vertically (from top to bottom). The top of the box represents the top of your guitar head where your tuning keys are.

Have fun experimenting with new sounds and shape!
