String and Tune Your Guitar

Do you know how to properly string or re-string your guitar using the right strings for your playing style? Choosing the right strings can make a big difference in the sound you may be trying to achieve as each type of string will have its own unique sound characteristic. There are many different types and brand names to choose from. There is also a proper method to stringing your guitar to obtain optimum performance.

The "Classic" style acoustic guitar is in a class all by itself, which is why it's called the Classic, and will always use nylon strings. Tip - do not put steel strings on a Classic acoustic guitar, the high tension of steel strings will severely damage the bridge and soundboard! The Classic guitar's nylon strings produce a round, mellow sound which is the preferred sound for classical, Latin, and most pop/folk styles. The Classic is commonly played with the fingers rather than a pick for a softer, smoother sound and for this reason has a wider fingerboard of 50mm, at the nut, vs. the 40mm fingerboard of the steel-string acoustic guitars.

The nylon strings of a Classic acoustic guitar are much easier to fret (hold down) with only 75-90 pounds of tension compared to steel-string models with tension at 150-200 pounds. Steel-string acoustic guitars however produce that bright, metallic sound heard in most Country and Western music. The five most common designs for steel-string acoustic guitar are the Jumbo, Dreadnought, NEX, Artist, and Folk. The Classic body style is the smallest and the easiest to hold, the Artist and Folk are the smallest steel-string designs and are about the same size as the Classic. The cut-away style allows easy upper fret access but reduces volume by 15-20%.

When it comes to tuning your guitar, a small battery operated hand held tuner is probably the most accurate and convenient. However, it's also a good idea to train your ear to hear proper pitch in case a tuner is not available. If you want to learn how to play by ear, this method will be a necessity. Another important reason to train your ear to hear proper pitch is to be able to recognize when your guitar might go out of tune while you are playing. Quite often strings will stretch, especially new strings, as you are playing and even more so if you play for extended periods of time. You will certainly want to quickly correct this problem and continue playing, in tune. One other common way to tune a guitar is with a piano, provided the piano that you use is in tune. No matter what kind of guitar you play, Bass guitar, Classic acoustic, Steel-String acoustic, Acoustic / Electric, or Electric guitar, using the correct method of stringing your guitar with the right strings for your playing style and properly tuning your new strings along with regular maintenance will help to keep you sounding your very BEST!
