Instructional Guitar Lesson DVD - Learn Guitar Techniques and Exercises

With the magnitude of great applications, videos, and educational resources available online or through a guitar lesson DVD, there are more and more players not relying on conventional lessons with a teacher. While on one hand this is great, there are also many players who often get lost while trying to teach themselves to play. In order to assist you through the process, we have decided to put together our advice on what approach will be best to take.

The first thing that pretty much all guitar players will want to do is get themselves the proper learning materials before jumping into the basics or lessons. It's always a great idea to do a little reading to familiarize yourself before hand. This way, when you are starting off with some beginner lessons, you can focus more on the guitar than things like the lingo being used or format in which the lesson is being taught. For example, if you are planning on learning the majority of your techniques and new skills through a guitar lesson DVD that teaches with the help of tablature, its obviously going to be a good idea to familiarize yourself with tabs before hand. One great piece of material that all new guitarists should have is a chord chart guide. This will teach you exact finger positions and variants of chords and many will also provide insight into which keys they are best suited for and things of that nature. These can be extremely helpful when coming across a chord you are unfamiliar with or simply practicing and learning new progressions.

A common occurrence for young players is getting frustrated during the learning process and giving up. This is often caused by players that either bore themselves or take too much on at once. Try to keep the lessons and techniques you learn quite varied in terms of genre and playing style. This will help keep your attention and when you are frustrated or bored you will quickly be able to move onto something else. On the other hand, for people that try to learn everything quickly, it can get frustrating, fast. These people have to remember to take their time and make sure they are learning the basics and basis of a particular song, riff, or technique they are learning. Don't expect to be able to master stairway to heaven or other advanced riffs and techniques or first week, or even your first month or year for that matter. Guitar players spend decades mastering their craft, if you want to play like some of the best you are going to have to put the time in too!

One tip that you might not find on a guitar lesson DVD but will certainly want to keep in mind when utilizing one is to pay more attention to your right hand, or your strumming hand. Many guitarists let their strumming hand come naturally, and that is fine. However, sometimes lack of rhythm or fluidness in your strumming or picking hand can cause you to be less efficient with your fret hand or develop bad habits that will cause problems down the road.
