Guitar - How to Understand Guitar Chords

Welcome to an all new way of learning and looking at Guitar Chords. Try to group your guitar chords in an easy to understand sequences - in similarity of shape and position on a reference grid that looks like the first six frets of your Guitar neck. Look at any songbook or Chord reference Directory to see how it is done. Note that the top of the guitar neck where the keys are is the top of your grid reference. You will find that there is similarity between E and Am, F and C, for example, group both positions together on a page for easy comparison.

Guitar Chords are the building blocks of separate notes combined together to give you a melodic sound - so that it matches the pitch of your voice or the key you want to play in. You can play a song in different keys, using what is called three chord progressions, to match your voice range, and each different progression will still be correct if the guitar chords used are in the correct progression. See our next article on Guitar Three Chord Tricks (progressions).

If you want to be a guitar heavy metal or guitar rock player you are going to want to use Power chords, and if you want to be a balladeer you are going to want to use Bar (Barre) chords, Open or Suspended chords, etc. An essential visual reference for practice, and for song-writer beginners, is the Three Chord Trick sequences that follow in a logical progression, which forms the basis of all music.

You do not need to be able to read music in order to learn to play Guitar, get a Song Book that has the lyrics and the chords above the words in the position and place that you play and change them in. Try to purchase an Educational Online Guitar Course that helps the absolute beginner - in Acoustic Guitar, Electric guitar, etc.

So, have fun jammin', the rest is up to you!
