The 3 Magic Words to Learning the Guitar

As you progress onward with your guitar lessons, it can be useful to keep yourself aware of these 3 magic words: Practice, Persistence and Patience. Allow these three words to become your motto for learning the guitar.

Whatever challenges are thrown your way you can make them become irrelevant in the face of your new level of confidence which will come from employing the 3 magic words to your guitar learning.

Numerous people who start out learning the guitar tend to apply almost the opposite of one or all three of these important guitar learning keys. Some people can become easily frustrated and impatient with their progress in the early stages.

This impatience can hinder confidence and when someone's confidence is low it can affect their performance. When their performance is not matching with their mentally constructed ideal they can become impatient and frustrated and so the cycle begins.

If is often the case that someone who competently learned something, (whether it was the guitar or something else) kept persisting through obstacles until they achieved the results they desired. Many times we look at a master guitarist and think that they are a 'natural' and we don't look at the persistence they had that kept them persisting through the obstacles.

Any mistake that you make (which is inevitable) can be learned from and changed. The more mistakes you learn from in the early stages, the more you will be aware of what doesn't work and then you can focus your mind solely on another solution. It is easier to persist with learning the guitar if you focus on learning from your mistakes.

Consistent practice allows you to learn faster and reinforces what you have already learnt. Many people have found that practicing the guitar more consistently helps them to learn better rather than learning it in big chunks every once in a while. To translate this into something you can take action on, it is better to practice an hour a day rather than practicing in one big block of time on the weekend.

It has been said that it takes 10,000 hours to master something so ask yourself how many hours have you put in. Many people lose patience after only 15 hours of guitar practice. Keep practicing and you will eventually reap the rewards.

When you are practicing the guitar you should aim for perfect practice. This means that you do not to move on to the next lesson leaving a trail of mistakes behind you. Become competent at each individual component of playing the guitar and then progress on. Otherwise bad habits will be ingrained which will be harder to unlearn.

Sloppy practice only reinforces sloppy learning. Perfect practice reinforces excellence. When the going gets tough just remember the three P's to learning the guitar, practice (perfect practice), persistence and patience.
