The Best Advice For Beginners at Guitar Part 2

In the last installment we talked about learning chords and getting a feel for your guitar. We left off talking about learning easy songs, so I want to go into more detail on that note.

I have been giving advice on guitar for a very long time, and have had many friends ask me for advice. Now we all know that the only purpose of learning guitar is to play songs so what is a good way to start learning?

After you have spent about a week getting to know your guitar, getting comfortable with it, learning basic chords it is time to start learning some basic songs as well. Basic songs do not have to be the ones found in your guitar book, they do not have to be "Silent Night" or some song that was written in the 60's by some unknown player sitting in his rocking chair on his front step. When I say basic, I mean containing the basic chords and ideally not very many chords,(3 or 4). This will make it easier to play as well as easier to remember, and what is a prouder moment than learning our first song and having it memorized? I thought so.

Find a song you like and find the tablature for it. Tablature is the song being written out for you in an easy to understand way. Find something you like, a lot of artist have at least some easy songs to their name.

Now your going to learn that guitar is not as easy as just fingering chords and strumming. You need to have rhythm to play as well. For some people this is natural, (I played drums when I started so this was easy for me), but for others it will be frustrating. This is another thing you have to get comfortable with, it's much like learning to dance, the more you do it the better you will be. Your body may feel awkward at first but keep at it, you will get it over time.

Now here is my tip to you rhythm seekers. Find the song you want to play and play along with it. Sure it may sound horrible at first but if you keep practicing it will start to sound similar to the recording. Put on headphones if you like so you cannot hear yourself,(but others will), or even if you had an electric guitar which doesn't make much sound when it is not plugged in. Put the written out music in front of you and play along with your song. You will probably want to just start with the beginning at first and the rewind it back until you have mastered it. Keep at it!

Good luck! Keep on Strumming!

Ben East has been playing guitar for most of his life.
