My Guitar and Me

Sometimes we think of people who play guitar as lonely, overly sensitive misfits that spend hours and hours alone. Really, this couldn't be farther from the truth. Sensitive? Yes. Lonely? Maybe. But out of touch? No way!

I got my first guitar from my uncle when I was twelve years old. It was a 12 string acoustic guitar that only had six strings on it. The neck was so bent and the action was so bad that if I had tried to put twelve strings on it, Jimi Hendrix couldn't have even played it. It was like the strings were an entire inch away from the fret board! This was problem, but it was also great for building up my finger strength.

I did spend a lot of time alone playing that old guitar along with songs on the radio and cassette tapes, but I learned mostly from watching and listening to other guitar players. Not just listening to them play, but listening to what they had to say. This was as close to taking formal lessons as I could get with the minimal amount of money that my family had to work with. It is very important that you listen to what older, more experienced guitarists have to say, even if you think you already know. If you don't, you might miss out on valuable lessons.

When I finally became comfortable with my guitar playing abilities, I began to play for and with my friends. I also got a new guitar. Having an instrument that was easier to play was a huge boost to my progress. I have to recommend getting your hands on the nicest guitar you can afford. Shop around. Look at new and used guitars. Choose the one that is right for you. This is very important because if you don't like the way your instrument looks or sounds you are never going to want to practice and without practice you'll never improve.

We all pick up the guitar for different reasons; self expression, just for fun or to impress our friends. In the end it boils down to one thing.....Ladies love a man who plays the guitar well. I'm going to leave you on that note my Real American Guitar Heroes to be. Keep practicing.
